About Khapsagai Wrestling

Khapsagai is a traditional form of upright wrestling originating from the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Russia. It is a proud cultural sport of the indigenous Sakha people and has now become a globally recognized form of wrestling.

The term “Khapsagai” translates to “to wrestle while standing”, and the sport reflects strength, technique, balance, and explosive throwing abilities. Unlike other forms of wrestling, groundwork is not allowed—the entire match takes place in a standing position, with the focus on grip control and throwing technique.

Historical Significance

Khapsagai has been practiced for centuries by the Yakut (Sakha) people and is traditionally performed during the annual Ysyakh summer festival. Over time, this sport has evolved into a regulated and internationally governed discipline.

Today, Khapsagai is one of the officially recognized sports in the “Children of Asia International Games,” a multi-sport event recognized by the International Olympic Committee and conducted under the patronage of the Russian government and Asian sports authorities.

Official Recognition

Traditional Wrestlings Association of India (TWAI) is the only officially recognized body in India affiliated with the International Khapsagai Federation, which governs the global development and regulation of this sport.

TWAI is committed to introducing and promoting Khapsagai Wrestling throughout India and ensuring Indian athletes participate in international events, including the Children of Asia Games and World Championships.
